Summer Straw & Bead Necklace from Krissy at B-Inspired Mama

My Priscilla loves making necklaces for herself as well as family.  And it's always fun to make our own beads instead of just go with store-bought.  Cut straws make great beads, and wooden beads are fun to personalize with paint!  Here's one fun summer necklace we made...

Supplies

  • Paper straws in various colors
  • Wood beads
  • Acrylic shimmer paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Cup with water
  • Pipe cleaner for holding wooden beads while painting
  • String or elastic cord

Directions

Step 1: Paint Beads
Thread wooden beads onto a pipe cleaner to make it easier to hold them while painting. Paint wooden beads with acrylic paint. Allow to dry.

Step 2: Cut Straws
Cut paper straws into 1/2" to 1" pieces to make beads.

Step 3: Tie Off
Cut elastic cord approximately 6 inches longer than you want your necklace to be. Tie one wooden bead securely to one end of cord.

Step 4: Make Your Necklace
String the elastic cord with cut straw and wooden beads.  Make a pattern... or not!

Once all but the last 6 inches of cord is full of beads, thread the cord through the very first bead and tie securely to the other cord end.  Trim cord ends.

Wear and enjoy!
