{Recipe} How to Make Homemade Taco Seasoning

Taco seasoning is the primary spice blend that we use in Casa Green Living. From tacos to chili to nachos, taco seasoning comes in handy for so many things. In addition to being expensive when you buy the spice envelopes in the store (about $1 per meal), many of them contain undesirable ingredients and GMOs. Some even include the excitotoxin, MSG.

Even when you buy organic and additive free taco seasoning, you're paying more than you need to. Taco seasoning is easy to make and inexpensive - even when you use organic ingredients. For maximum budget savings, buy spices from the bulk spices section of your natural foods store instead of buying individual jars.

This recipe is enough to fill a small spice jar. I usually mix up a triple batch or more to store in a larger glass jar since I use so much of it in the course of a month.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp chili powder
  • 2 Tbsp cumin
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
Directions
  1. Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl.
  2. Store in a glass jar until ready to use. Approximately 2 tablespoons of mix = one store bought spice packet.

  1. I've been meaning to post my homemade taco seasoning for a while. I started making it when my sister (who doesn't eat sugar) lived with us and discovered that the Trader Joe's one had cane sugar! My recipe looks a bit different than yours so I'll have to try yours and see how I like it. And hopefully I'll get around to posting mine someday...
