Healthy Back to School Snacks with Nature Box

Do your kids love to snack like mine do? Who am I kidding? I love snacks, too! With a new baby at home, having easy snacks that require zero prep beyond opening a package or portioning it out into a bowl has been a lifesaver. Finding healthy snacks that require zero prep, though? That's been a little trickier.

I want snacks for my family that:
  • Are GMO free
  • Aren't full of artificial sweeteners
  • Aren't full of chemical preservatives
  • Are MSG free
  • Are nutritious
  • Taste good
  • Are easy to serve
  • Are easily accessible
Told ya is was a little tricky. So I was delightfully surprised when I found snacks from Nature Box that fit all these requirements! Because seriously: we were in a snacking rut and needed help!

What's in a Box
Nature Box is a subscription snack service that delivers 5 packs of snacks straight to your house every month. You can either pick your snacks or let them surprise you each month (and if you don't like something they sent you, they will replace it for free the following month).

Picking is made easier by their filtering system that lets you browse snacks that fit specific dietary needs. Of course, I selected non-GMO but you could choose snack that are vegan, low carb, nut free, gluten conscious (this lets you pick snacks without gluten containing ingredients) and more. All Nature Box snacks are free of artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners - which is extra awesome if you have a kid like my nephew who is allergic to artificial colors. No brainer snack shopping! Love it!

I  decided to choose my snacks and ended up with:
  • Carrot Strawberry Fruit Chews
  • Mexicana Mango
  • Coconut Date Energy Bites
  • South Pacific Plantain Chips
  • Blueberry Almond Bites

My Thoughts on My Snacks

These are the snacks I got in my first box. Here is what I thought of each one:

Carrot Strawberry Fruit Chews
These were gummy fruit snacks and they were tasty. Because they were a little sticky, they came packed in five single serving packs inside the larger bag. These would be perfect for tossing in a lunch box for a sweet treat or to keep in your purse as bribes, er, "culinary incentives" for kids while out and about.

Mexicana Mango
These were large pieces of dried mango. They didn't taste overly sweet or super processed like some dried mango can. The pieces were very generously sized and there were a lot of them in the bag so it went a long way.

Coconut Date Energy Bites
These were surprisingly soft instead of more tough like a date can be. My husband and son particularly loved these - which doesn't surprised me because my husband is a coconut fiend.

South Pacific Plantain Chips
I am not normally a big fan of banana chips but I ordered these with the idea that my son would probably really like them. Plantain chips (or these, anyway) are actually rather different than banana chips. They were salty and crunchy - kind of like potato chips but made with plantains instead. I think these may have been my favorite thing in the box.

Blueberry Almond Bites
These were kind of like baby granola bars but with a puffed rice instead of a dense granola. They were very good, satisfyingly crunchy and everyone in my family liked them.

Things I loved about Nature Box

You guys know that I would never recommend a product to you unless I truly love it. The honest truth is, I really liked my Nature Box Snacks. Here's why:
  • They make picking snacks based on dietary preferences (including non-GMO) very easy.
  • These are high quality snacks - you can tell by the taste and their delightfully short ingredient lists.
  • Everything tasted great. If you get something and you don't think it tastes great, they'll give you a replacement snack instead. That makes it easier to be adventurous with choosing snacks - there is no risk!
  • A box of tasty snacks shows up at my house each month. This means I don't have to stand in a grocery store aisle with two kids and try and read ingredients if I want to try something new.
  • They have SO MANY snacks to choose from. Seriously. They have more than 100 choices!

There are a few things I would like the see Nature Box change to improve their service. Mainly, I'd like to have the option to add on bonus bags (for an extra cost, of course) each month. They recently started offering add-on snack bars that you can add to your order - so that's a great move in the right direction. If I know I need extra snacks one month for a party or to send to my son's preschool for class snack time I'd like to be able to do that since I can't buy any of Nature Box's snacks in stores. Of course, that's not a reason to avoid Nature Box. Just something I hope they add to their service later.
