How to Find An Affordable Doctor that Makes Housecalls - Online!

This post is brought to you by American Well.

It's totally happened to us: We have a sick kid in the middle of the night. If urgent care were open, that's where we'd go but it just closed. And now we need to ask ourselves: is this bad enough to warrant an ER visit?

This has also happened: I have some nagging but non-urgent health questions. I'd love to get a doctor's input but that would require either:
  • Spending part of my husband's day off at the doctor instead of with him.
  • Arranging to have the car on a work day and then bringing both kids with me to the doctor.
  • OR
  • Arranging to have the car and a babysitter so I can go to the doctor myself.
Conclusion: the hassle of getting myself to the doctor is a bigger inconvenience than it's worth.

Have you been there?  If you have, you'll love the new online healthcare service from American Well. American Well is the nation’s largest telehealth company and connects patients with their choice of doctor for immediate, live online visits—day or night, on your tablet, smart phone or computer.

How it works

You can use American Well on your computer, tablet or smart phone. I decided that my iPad would be the most convenient option to do a video call so I downloaded the app there (It's called Amwell - just click here and you'll get sent to the right place to get it).

After registering, I could see a list of available doctors and read more about them. Once I found a doctor I wanted to chat with about some of my general health concerns, I tapped "select provider" to connect.

After filling out a quick form with basic info on symptoms (I wanted to talk about postpartum weightloss), I just had to wait for her the finish with a previous patient and connect.

We discussed my history and concerns briefly and she gave me some suggestions for things to try. In the time it would have taken just to drive to my doctor's office (not to mention find a sitter, wait in the waiting room, see the doctor and drive home!) I was able to see a provider while hiding from my kids and hubby in my office for about 1 minutes.

Easy. Quick. Convenient. Awesome.

It's definitely something I could see myself using going forward - especially with sick kids or a sick hubby who aren't well at a time other than office hours. There's a doctor available 24/7 and your insurance may even cover it! How great is that?

Here's a little more about how American Well works:

Try it yourself!

Creative Green Living readers can try this service now for just $1! Visit Amwell online or download the app in the app store and use code "MOMSQUAD" to get your first visit with an American Well doctor for only $1!

  5. I have heard of this concept and think it can be a great time and money saver for minor medical issues.

  6. What an interesting idea. this is a great thought when you don't want to drag a sick child out.

  7. I love that this is available, especially for families with kids. You just never know when something will happen and if you're like me, you tend to diagnose things online and sometimes make it all worse than it might actually be!

  8. This is the greatest idea for an APP in a while. I like it and I see where its relevant especially to those who can't afford regular scheduled visits

  11. This is a great idea. Sometime it's impossible to get your regular doctor on the phone, never mind actually see them in person.

  12. I do like this idea. Very handy when you need it.

  13. This is such a better alternative to taking a sick child to the ER in the middle of the night

  14. This seems similar to the nurse line we use when the children are ill.

  15. This is really nice so you don't have to get yourself or someone else who is feeling under the weather dressed and out to the doctor unless necessary. It's a great way to find out if it's worth seeing someone in person or not.

    1. That's a great question! I don't have Kaiser myself so I'm not sure. You can get your first visit for free, though, with the MOMSQUAD code.

The prices are also reasonable (only $25 to see a nutritionist, $50 for a specialist) - which might cost less than your co-pay especially if you choose them over going to the ER. I've had insurance in the past where I have to pay a $100 co-pay just to walk into the ER so paying $50 cash for AmWell would be a huge savings even if my insurance didn't cover it.
