The Natural Drug-Free Way We Treat Bumps, Bruises and Boo Boos

Being a kid is hard. Kids play hard and sometimes that means a lot of bumps and bruises. From my youngest learning how to walk (and falling down - a lot) and my five year old trying to be a superhero / ninja / knight, we deal with a lot of bumped, bruised and bonked heads, knees and elbows in Casa Green Living.

Bumps 'n Bruises

Hylands (a company whose products I already love!) asked me to check out their new Bumps 'n Bruises with Arnica Ointment stick. And since we do a lot of bumping and bruising (per above) I said "sure!"

I was sent a box with all three tube designs. The tubes are made of post-consumer recycled cardboard - which I love. Plus they are super cute and kid friendly!

What my kids thought

One of the things the package suggests is distracting your injured kid with the cute package image. I'll admit: I thought this was silly. But I promised I'd try it so the first time I used it on Baby A after bonking his head, I held it up and said, hey look at this! I kid you not, he instantly stopped crying and wanted to hold the tube. Luckily, the face is printed on the outside sheath, so he could keep holding it while I rubbed some of the ointment on his boo boo to give some pain relief and help with swelling.

After using it the first couple times, my five year old now requests it if he knocks his head or knees on things. He calls it "the bonk stick." As in, "Mom, I hit my knee on the table. Can I use the bonk stick to make it feel better?" The stick is super easy to use, so it's easy for him to just rub it on the spot that hurts instead of me guessing where it should go.

(I should point out that the Bumps 'n Bruises with Arnica Ointment stick is not designed to be used on open sores or broken skin. So: bumped knees, yes. Scraped knees, no).

What Mom thinks

Things I love about the Bumps 'n Bruises with Arnica Ointment:
  • It's cute!
  • Very portable - I keep one in the diaper bag and one at home.
  • My kids like it.
  • It is free of gross ingredients like parabens, phthalates, dyes and paba.
  • Eco-friendly paperboard packaging - no plastic!
  • Natural and effective (because if it isn't effective, why use it?).
  • It works for grown ups, too!
