Five Healthy Habits To Work on This Summer

I'm sure I'm not the only mom who gets to the end of the school year and feels kind of liberated. I mean, yes, now I have to figure out what to do with my kids for 30 more hours a week than during the school year. BUT I get to be the one in charge of the schedule now - no more being a slave to the clock and the demands of school hours, clubs, teams, etc. Whew!

The slower pace of summer is a great time to get back to the basics of some great health habits that are easy to forget when things get crazy. Here are five healthy habits that are super easy to implement but that your body will thank you for!

Drink More Water

I know what you're going to say: Plain water is boring. And you know what? I totally agree. There is no good reason to drink boring water when really delicious infused water recipes are SO EASY to make. This is a fun one to do as a family - let the kids take turns choosing what they want to infuse water with. You can get my favorite strawberry mint water recipe here to get you started or download my book, Infused, to get 120 delicious recipes to try this summer!

Cool Off with Healthy Treats

When it's hot, it's easy to want to eat ice cream and popsicles for breakfast.....not that I've ever done that (confession: I have totally done that). Don't take on all those empty calories from sugar and the artificial who-knows-what - your body doesn't need it!

Instead, make guilt free "nice cream" by putting about 2 cups of frozen fruit in a blender or food processor with about 1/4 cup - 1/2 cup of milk or plant milk. That great big bowl of deliciousness you see above is a mix of frozen blueberries, strawberries and peaches with about 1/2 cup of whole milk. Need more healthy treat inspiration? Get Your Beauty Sleep

It's more than just a cute saying - sleeping really helps you do your best. Aside from helping you avoid unsightly bags under your eyes, your body does a lot of detox and repair work for you while you are asleep. Late sunsets and early sunrises can make this harder to do during the summer so pick up a pair of black out curtains to either let yourself sleep in or to grab a nap in the middle of the day. There's also a lot to be said for going to bed when the sun goes to bed instead of staying up until 2am watching videos on Facebook. Ahem.

Take a Multi-Vitamin

Even though you're no longer a slave to the school calendar, summers can get busy and when you're on the go you're not always eating a nutritionally optimal diet. For the last few weeks I'm been trying the Every Woman's One Daily Multi from New Chapter. It's a non-GMO vitamin made with organic vegetables and herbs that are fermented with beneficial probiotics. It is specifically tailored for women with nutrients to support stress, bone, immune function and energy.*+

Check the New Chapter website for local stores that carry these or pick them up on Amazon (hello, free Prime shipping!)

Go Analog

Get your family together to do something that doesn't involve looking at a screen. Go for a walk. Get paint on your hands. Play in the sprinklers. Do a craft. Take one picture for Instagram and then put your phone down and work on being in the moment. Not sure what to do? I've got almost 100 great ideas for creative things to do with kids!
