Craft Room / Home Office Tour & Makeover Reveal

Like most full time professional bloggers, I work from home. What I call my studio is a combination of craft room, home office, photography studio and writer's office. That's a lot of things to cram into one room! I need a place to sit (or stand) and work on my computer as well as store my huge stockpile of craft supplies - plus a place to photograph or make videos of everything.

The color scheme is light and bright - with a rainbow of colors (because "rainbow" IS my favorite color). Come take a look around!

Before

When we first bought the farmhouse, the room that I am now using for my studio was a girl's room, complete with bright purple walls and butterfly wallpaper border.

NOW

I think you'll agree it's a pretty significant change!
To get started, of course the paint color and wallpaper had to go. I used my HomeRight SteamMachine with a wallpaper steam plate to remove the border.

Next, I painted the walls white with non-toxic, zero VOC paint from Colorhouse in Bisque .02 (The Amazon preview makes this look beige - it's actually very very white). The starting color was so garish, I was worried about how many coats of paint I would need to get it to actually look white. I was so pleased that 90% of the color was covered up with just one coat. With two coats you can't tell that the room was ever that crazy pinky purple to begin with! The paint from Colorhouse out performs any premium brand hardware store paint I have ever used - without any of the smell or toxic offgassing! There is literally NO REASON why people should be buying toxic, stinky paint any more when high perfoming clean options are so readily available.

Desk

The focal point above my desk is my "Be Creative" sign (click for tutorial). To the left I have wood frames I personalized with washi tape and stick-on flowers.

On my desk (left to right):
Orchid from IKEA (in a bucket I had on hand) • Pink clutter-containing tray from Cynthia Rowley (from HomeGoods) • Basket (for sticky notes) I had on hand painted blue with Rustoleum Seaside • Scissor holder is a Skurar plant pot from IKEA • Basket and scissors are on a shelf from IKEA • Green box from IKEA • Cubby is a photo storage box turned on its side • Unicorn tape dispenser from Amazon • Pink tape dispenser from Scotch via Amazon • Swingline stapler from Amazon • Skurar candle holder from IKEA on top of a tray hold my fine point sharpies, ultra fine point sharpies, Zebra z grip pens, mechanical pencils and highlighters • Above the pens is an IKEA spice rack painted with Rustoleum Seaside. The small IKEA spice jars hold office supplies like paper clips, binder clips, etc • Lamp is from IKEA • Chevron lampshade on hand.

Office furniture:
Glass desktop from IKEA • White adjustable height table legs from IKEA • Pink top trash and recycling cans from IKEA • Henriksdal bar height chair from IKEA with a chevron cover from Rockin Cushions • Pink box on floor is from IKEA •

Craft Supplies

If you are sitting in the chair at my desk and start to turn to the left to turn around, you will see these epic walls of craft greatness! I have five Billy bookshelves from IKEA (two skinny and 3 full size) in my office full of plastic bins from Dollar Tree. The pretty labels were cut out of white contact paper on my Cricut mini (although if you don't already own a Cricut, get the Cricut Explore Air instead - it's a higher performer and you'll be happier with it)

Photography table

This is definitely the less glamorous part of the room - my photography table. It's right under the window for the best light. On top of the table I have some old fence board that I use most often for my background.

Across the top of the bookshelves I have a flat curtain rod being held in place by two clamps. Clamped on the curtain rod, I have this phone holder clamp that I use to hold my phone so I can film overhead "Tasty-style" videos like this one:

Under the table I have a great drawer organizer that holds photoshoot tools (like clamps and backgrounds), and photo props. The bottom drawer has yarn (which really has nothing to do with photos) - but that's where it goes. The desk is up on bed risers to give the table extra height and I also store photography equipment like my reflector and my tripod under the photo desk.

Needlework Nook

To the right of my desk I have my "needlework nook". Above the shelf I have a great shaddow box that my mom made for me full of my grandmother and great grandmother's antique knitting, crochet, sewing and tatting tools and samples.

On the top shelf of the bookshelf I then have both my great grandmother's knitting needles and crocet hooks alongside my modern ones. Double pointed needled (DPNs) are grouped together by size and style and inserted upright into a jar of rice. This keeps them together and easy to find! Likewise, the crocet hooks are also in a small jar of rice which makes it easy to keep them separated and easy to find.
Below the knitting needles and crochet hooks, I have some more dollar store bins as well as a plastic drawer to organize sewing notions and sewing machine parts. I cut the labels out of white contact paper using my Cricut mini just like for the bins on the bookshelves.

Thanks for coming!
