best healthy natural sunscreen guide

You would probably have to be living under a rock to not know that sunscreen has come under fire recently.

Sketchy ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate have been demonstrated to cause harms to coral reefs and in some areas like Hawaii and Turks and Caicos have banned sunscreens that use those ingredients.

A study published in early 2019 showed that common sunscreen chemicals are absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream in amounts many times higher than FDA standards (read Consumer Reports' write up about it here)

Mermaid inspired DIY bath bombs

These delightful mermaid-inspired bath fizzy sprinkles are easier to make than a bath bomb but just as fun to use!

Instead of having to make sure your moisture balance is just right for packing the bath bombs into molds, the fizzy bath sprinkles get the same bath-time effect but with less work and a larger margin of error.

AvoBath Inspired Lush Bath Bomb recipe - make it with or without soap coloring to make your homemade bath bombs your desired color

Lush is highly regarded as the makers of some of the best bath bomb recipes. This recipe will teach you how to make bath bombs with avocado and essential oils just like the AvoBath bath bombs at Lush!

The official Lush bath bomb recipe is a little different (and of course top secret!). We do know that they use avocado and extra virgin olive oil along with bergamot and lemongrass scent.

These homemade bath bombs use avacado along with coconut oil and essential oils that still capture the same scent profile as the Lush AvoBath recipe.

Rumor has it that the real Lush bath bomb recipe uses rosewood essential oil. Even at my favorite provider of essential oils for bath bombs, it's really expensive!

To make our DIY Lush bath bomb recipe more affordable, we use the Love essential oil blend.  It still uses bergamot and other yummy citrus oils. We also add in lemongrass oil for that fresh, avo bath scent.

I start with lower amounts of essential oils in my DIY bath bombs so that they are safe for everybody. If you love a really strong scent to your homemade bath bombs and you know you don't have sensitive skin, go ahead and add more! Sniff and adjust as you go!

Bath bomb recipe with activated charcoal

So you want to learn how to make black bath bombs? Want to make your bath water black? I've got you!

Last year, black bath bombs blew up on Instagram (check out black bath bombs on Instagram here).

For the most part, black bath bombs are made black by their use of activated charcoal rather than black dye or soap coloring.

Activated charcoal has been used in traditional health care settings as something you take internally (you swallow it!) to help poisoning or overdose for basically forever (learn more about medical use of activated charcoal here).

Yellow, green red and blue vintage pyrex bowls for cooking
photo by Emily Carlin. See the original here.

This article was originally published October of 2015. It was last updated October 28, 2018

If you are wondering if your old Pyrex dishes contain lead or are still safe to use in your kitchen, you have come to the right place!

I grew up using (what are now considered) vintage Pyrex bowls and baking in vintage Pyrex dishes.

In fact, my mom and grandmother both owned a set of the same colorful Pyrex nesting mixing bowls shown above.

These were the same Pyrex bowls I hoped to own one day as well.

My whole life, these colorful Pyrex mixing bowls have been my very favorite to use.

As a child, I learned how to cook eggs in a microwave in the little blue one. I've made a hundred batches or more of muffins, cookies, and pancake batter in the big yellow one.

Here is picture of me with my mom making a pie crust in the green one:

DIY face scrub recipe with essential oils
Making a homemade face scrub isn't hard! You can whip up this easy DIY face scrub recipe and have a soothing spa experience at home all for pennies on the dollar compared to expensive pre-made face scrubs (not to mention sketchy ingredients like parabens and phthalates and hormone disrupting chemicals, oh my!).

This homemade face scrub is made with aloe, sugar and lavender oil. Aloe is a natural skin moisturizer and is used in a Ayurvedic medicine as a remedy for all kinds of skin problems (read more about aloe in skin care here). Lavender essential oil is very soothing to the skin and helps reduce redness and irritation. Sugar is a gentle exfoliant that helps remove dead skin cells without the use of microplastics found in some storebought scrubs.

I'm sure you will love this soothing homemade face scrub recipe! Just as with any face scrub (even the kind you buy at the store!), be sure to keep it away from your eyes and if any sign of irritation develops, discontinue use immediately.

Tamara, The Lead Safe Mama broke the internet again! This time it was over menstrual cups. Best detox water recipes - strawberry infused detox water recipe

Have you caught on to the infused water (or as some like to call it, detox water) craze yet? Why drink boring, plain water when you can make healthy flavored waters at home for hardly any money?

Doing something as simple as add fresh fruit and herbs to infuse water with flavor increases how much you enjoy your water - which makes you want to drink more - which gets you to drink more of the delicious infused water effortlessly!

Pssst. Incase you didn't know, I wrote THE BOOK on infused water / detox water recipes. Check it out on Amazon here!

....but back to the strawberry mint infused water recipe, because that's why you're here, right?
This is one of my favorite recipes in the book!

Something about the combination of sweet strawberries and fresh mint just mingle together in a way that is crisp - yet slightly sweet - in a way that is oh-so-refreshing!

We grow a mint plant mostly so I have a ready supply of fresh mint available for infused water! If you don't have your own mint plant, that's okay! Just pick up a small pack of organic mint in the produce aisle of your local grocery store or at your local farmers market.

#DIYbodyscrub #DIYgiftsforher #creativegreenliving
Making DIY body scrubs like this yummy cinnamon sugar and coffee scrub are a great way to energize at the start of your day. Making this homemade sugar scrub means you can avoid sketchy ingredients that are often in commercially produced scrubs like artificial fragrance, parabens, phthalates, petroleum based ingredients and more.

The coconut sugar used in the scrub lends a toasty, caramelized scent while the coffee helps wake you up. Caffeine is known to be great for your skin as well and this coffee scrub is a great way to get it! The sugar and coffee work together to gently exfoliate your skin while the coconut oil leaves your skin feeling soft. Overall, this homemade body scrub will leave you feeling energized and your skin will feel pampered as you get ready to take on your day.

This sugar scrub makes a great gift as well - maybe even add an "I like you a latte" tag for a little punny humor.

healthy non-stick cookware alternatives

You've been thinking about it for a while. That nagging thought in the back of your head: Maybe nonstick cookware isn't as safe as they say. And while I hate to be the bearer of bad news, that nagging voice in the back of your head is right: This is the year you need to get serious about ditching nonstick cookware.

Is nonstick safe?

Before we get started, I have a confession to make.

How to make sugar scrub with peppermint essential oils
If you want to learn how to make sugar scrub, you're in the right place! This peppermint sugar scrub recipe combines vanilla and peppermint essential oils to get a yummy smelling scrub that you layer to get a pretty candy cane effect - perfect for gift giving!

I love giving healthy personal care products for quick and easy Christmas gifts. Using staples that you already have in your kitchen and some yummy essential oils, you can create a great peppermint sugar scrub that will exfoliate dead skin and smell delicious at the same time! One of the best parts about this project is that you do not have to be crafty to pull it off.

To make a delightful peppermint scrub, start with an organic peppermint oil and combine it with sugar and coconut oil to make an awesome sugar scrub. I love using mine to exfoliate my whole body in the shower or to scrub dirt off my hands after I have been in the garden.

Update: This recipe was originally created by using Rocky Mountain Oils' "Blend of Vanilla" and "candy cane" oils. Due to shortages in the worldwide vanilla crop, vanilla essential oil is in short supply and RMO is no longer carrying it. This recipe was updated in 2018 to reflect oils that are currently available on the market.

Today I am thrilled to declare victory on behalf of parents everywhere who want to trust that when they go to Target to buy toys for their kids that they will be getting SAFE and LEAD FREE products!

Tamara Rubin of Lead Safe Mama and I have been covering the safety of lead in fidget spinners for five months now. Wednesday morning we were thrilled that CBS This Morning ran a report about the recent study conducted by the US Public Interest Research Group that was triggered by our research. Based on our previous study of more than 80 fidget spinners, it was no surprise that they found high levels of lead in two different fidget spinners sold at Target.

USPIRG sent a letter to Target with the results of their tests and Target responded that they would not pull the fidget spinners containing high levels of lead off their shelves. They said that since the spinners in question were labeled for use by children 14 and over that they did not meet the legal definition of "toy" and were therefore NOT subject to Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations requiring toys contain less than 90 PPM lead.

After CBS and local Fox News stations ran the story nationwide, Target relented and removed the highly leaded spinners from their website and said they would remove them from store shelves. VICTORY!

What did we learn?

In the two press interviews I gave this week as well as the Facebook Live video we made after our interview with Fox News, I said that the thing that has affected change the fastest regarding toxins in consumer goods over the last decade is angry moms. When moms get educated about toxins in consumer goods, educate their friends about toxins in consumer goods and then reach out to companies and demand safer products, change happens.

This is exactly what happened with Target this week. Target wasn't going to change anything because
legally they didn't have to. Cue the moms:

After two full days of pressure, Target finally decided to do the right thing and pull the fidget spinners off the website and off store shelves.

Have you seen the headlines floating around that there is lead in fidget spinners and that they could kill your child and that you should throw them away now!!!! (so much drama!) If you are wondering if that's true, you have come to the right place! As of this date, the Lead Safe Mama, Tamara Rubin and I have done the most comprehensive testing of fidget spinners that we are aware of and have an updated set of data to share!
