Step 4: 
Once all of the leg parts have formed a whole, you're ready for the TOTALLY OPTIONAL step of adding some wood fill to the teensy cracks between the pieces. (Please note that I accidentally started painting first. My bad.)


Doing this will make the project take longer because you'll have to let the wood fill dry, then sand it, then touch up any spots that need it, and then sand again--all before you paint. If that's too finicky, just skip it all and get yo' paint on.

I used some leftover stain that was still hangin' around after we redid our deck, but any kind of exterior paint will work. You'll need to do at least two coats because new wood soaks up liquid like a sponge.
