How to Make Carved Heart Stone Jewelry

This post is brought to you by Dremel.

Have you ever used a Dremel rotary tool in your crafting? I'll admit that I've been coveting one for a while and was so thrilled to be sent one to play with! I'm actually glad I didn't get one sooner so that I could have the new Dremel Micro 8050.

The Micro 8050 is the most “brilliantly powerful” and precise cordless rotary tool that Dremel has ever produced. The Micro 8050 can cut, carve, engrave, sand, grind, sharpen, clean and polish—just like a traditional Dremel rotary tool but it's got an easy to hold grip that's similar to holding a pencil AND it has a small light that lights up the spot you're drilling. Awesome!

Why have I always wanted a Dremel rotary tool you ask? To drill holes in sea glass and rocks! So, of course, that's what I did - and I made this cute drilled heart necklace. It's actually super easy to make - it just takes a bit of time to drill a hole all the way through a rock.

Directions

Step 1: Mark
Use the felt tip marker to mark the approximate location of the three holes you'll drill to form your heart.

Step 2: Drill
Follow the instructions that came with your Dremel Micro 8050 to install the glass drilling bit. Place your rock on your wood piece to protect your work surface.

Add a drop of cutting oil on one of the top dots, set your tool to 15 and gently press straight down with your bit. Pick up the tool, add another drop of oil if the spot you are drilling is now dry and repeat. Continue like this until you have drilled completely through your rock. It might take a while to drill each hole - and that's okay! Go slowly and let the tool do the work. Don't press down hard!

Repeat to drill the second top hole.

Drill the third (bottom) hole. Use the sides of the drill bit to rub away any pokey or jagged edges inside the heart outline.

Drill a hole at the top to hang it by.

Step 3: Clean up
Wash your drilled rock with soapy water to remove the cutting oil and slurry.

Step 4: String
String your rock on a thin piece of hemp or leather twine to wear around your neck.

I think these would make great gifts!

You can purchase the Micro 8050 online at Amazon.com and HomeDepot.com for $89 USD.

  2. Hi Carissa, I loved this tutorial. I want to give it a try, but do you think a Dremel Engraver 290 JJ is good enough?
    Thank you, Paul

    1. I looked up the tool you have and it doesn't look like you can change out bits on yours. Is that right?

For this project, you really need to use the exact bit I linked to so you would need a tool that could accomodate that.

      Good luck!
