How to Make a DIY Teacup Pin Cushion

Hi, everybody! I'm Paige from Little Nostalgia (blog no longer active) and I bet I'm not the only one who has a pile of weirdly-sized fabric scraps sitting in my office, waiting for me to do something with them. I'm great about using MOST of the fabric I buy, but then I get to the end of a project and the reject pieces just... stay there. My bad. I did figure out how to use one of them, though, so that's progress! Today I have an easy tutorial for making a teacup pin cushion out of that pesky extra material. (Bonus points for also using the orphan teacup I found in my china cabinet. #multitasking)

Supplies

  • an old teacup
  • larger fabric scrap, mine was about 11 x 12
  • batting
  • hot glue gun
  • ponytail holder or rubber band

Directions

Step 1:
Iron your fabric scrap--you'll be a sad panda if you have a big crease down the middle of your finished product--and lay it facedown on the table. Put a handful of batting on top.

Step 2:
Gather the ends of the fabric together and tie them with the rubber band/ponytail holder. You should end up with a ball like this:

Step 3:
Stuff the blob of cozy goodness into the teacup with the gathered end pointing down. The fabric ball should be larger slightly larger than the cup opening.

Step 4:
It's time for the very scientific smooshing process. Your fabric may have a couple of wrinkles around the edges, so take a finger and squish the batting around a little to smooth things out. (A note for your sanity: you probably won't be able to get it PERFECTLY flat because it's a ball of batting. Just get rid of any large gaps.)

Step 5:
Stick the hot glue gun between the cup and the fabric, and squeeze out a dot. Repeat this every inch or so to keep the ball o' batting securely in the cup. Smoosh the fabric into place as you go, if necessary.

And that's it! I wasn't kidding when I said this one was easy. If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball! use a rubber band, you can make a pin cushion. I kept this one for myself, but I might whip up a few more as gifts for my crafty friends and family members. Adorable teacups are easy to find at thrift stores, and we already know that a mountain of leftover fabric can happen to the best of us.

I think this would also be cute as part of a "my first sewing kit" gift for a kiddo (or adult!) who wants to learn.

What do you like to make out of leftover fabric? Have you ever made your own pin cushion?
